Most parents know that museums are a fantastic way to engage children in the subjects of art, history, and science but did you know that the Smithsonian hosts a nationwide event where you can take your family to a museum for free? Yes! For one day, the Smithsonian foots the bill for admission and Twin City families have several incredible institutions to choose from!
Museum Day Live! is an annual event hosted by Smithsonian magazine in which participating museums across the country open their doors to anyone presenting a Museum Day Live! ticket… for free. For Twin City families, it is an ideal opportunity to spark a passion for science at the kid-centered, interactive Works Museum or introduce yourselves to a unique niche at the Minnesota Center for Book Arts. There are so many places to go; you are sure to have a memorable day learning with your littles!
All you have to do is sign up to get TWO FREE MUSEUM TICKETS for the Smithsonian Magazine’s Museum Day Live! – Saturday, September 26th!
The Smithsonian Institute is known for it’s commitment to research and education. It began as a somewhat mysterious donation bequeathed to the United States government in 1835 by a British scientist named James Smithson. His will stipulated that the money is used “for the increase & diffusion of knowledge among men” and that is precisely what the Smithsonian has done. The yearly Museum Day Live! event is just a part of their dedication to making sure kids in America have ample opportunity to learn.
Visit the Smithsonian’s MUSEUM DAY website for TWO FREE MUSEUM TICKETS to the local participating museum of your choice for admission on Saturday, September 26th. Just fill in the form online, and tickets will be emailed to you.
Each household is limited to 2 free tickets, and more than 1,500 museums are participating throughout the country. Join the whole nation in a celebration of culture – from art to history to science and more!
There are SEVEN museums participating in the Twin Cities area, and over TWENTY in the state of Minnesota. We are proud to be part of a state which values education and culture, and we cannot wait to show up on Museum Day Live! to learn!
Participating museums in our area include:
- The Works Museum
- American Swedish Institute
- Minnesota Landscape Arboretum
- Minnesota Center for Book Arts
- Minnesota History Center
One of the most significant benefits of Museum Day Live! is that it is a reason to get to know some of the incredible institutions always available to us. The American Swedish Institute, for example, includes the magnificent Swan Turnblad Mansion and commemorates the rich history of Swedes in America – for families of Swedish heritage, who knows! Maybe you’ll see pictures of your ancestors!
All of these museums have incredible exhibits right now, so it is an excellent time to check them out. Go now to the website, get your tickets, and have an unforgettable day marveling at some of the Twin Cities’ most remarkable artifacts and displays!
