Family Day: Make Play

Join Minneapolis Institute of Art for our FREE monthly event for families, kids, and the young at heart. On the second Sunday of every month, the museum is filled with hands-on art activities, live music, dance performances, artist demonstrations, family tours and more — all inspired by Mia’s incredible collection.

This month come play and make toys inspired by your imagination and art in the galleries.

All-Day Activities

Art-making: Rod Puppet Making
Reception Hall, third floor
Be inspired by Mia’s artworks and create a rod puppet that you can play with and move!

Interactive Activity: Puppet Activation Center
Reception Hall, third floor
What does your puppet sound like? How does it move? Activate your puppet to life with the help of interactive prompts and guidance by Monkeybear’s Harmolodic Workshop puppeteers Antoine and Andrew.

Interactive Play: Artful Play Space
Studios 111-113, first floor
Come play in a sensory play space co-designed with MiniSota Play Cafe, a Minnesota themed indoor play area for young kids based in Champlain, MN.

Gallery Hunt: Puppet’s Adventure at Mia!
General Mills lobby, first floor
It’s easy to travel near and far when you are at Mia! Take your puppet on an adventure around the world and see what new sights and friends you find in the journey!

Timed Activities

Performance: Morris Dance

Watch Uptown on the Lakes Morris folk dances from England that involve stick clashing, jingle bells, and live music! They will also lead interactive workshops during the day.

Target Wing Atrium, first floor
Join Uptown on the Lakes Morris and get your feet stepping and jingling to the rhythms of Morris Dance, a folk dance from England. Each session is half hour.

Performances: Monkeybear Puppet Performances
Noon, 1PM, 2PM
Pillsbury Auditorium, second floor
Travel to Laos and Managuara (Indigenous Central America) through the stories recounted by Monkeybear puppeteers Liping and Rebekah. Monkeybear is a group that supports Native/POC in developing skills in contemporary puppetry.

Ballet Co.Laboratory presents your holiday favorite with a whimsical twist! Meet characters from the Nutcracker like White Rabbit and Cheshire Cat Dolls as they twirl and dance in the galleries.
