We all remember choosing our favorite colors out of the Crayola box for our childhood drawings (my favorites were Macaroni-n-Cheese and Cerulean). For over 100 years Crayola has been providing children with tools to create colorful worlds and fridge-worthy depictions of Mom and Dad!
From time to time Crayola decides to retire a beloved color (or colors as in 1990 when they retired 8!). Some have disappeared due to controversy (like Indian Red), and others were taken down for more mysterious reasons (like Prussian Blue). Today – March 31st – is National Crayon Day, and to mark the occasion Crayola has announced that the color Dandelion will be retired from the crayon box!
Dandelion, a warm shade of yellow, was first added to the Crayola Box of 64 in 1990 as part of the replacement for the colors they retired that year, but will now join other retired colors including Prussian Blue, Maize, and Raw Umber. Crayola is retiring the Dandelion color to make room for a well anticipated new color that is coming soon.
The warm shade of yellow, which, again, was first added to the iconic Box of 64 in 1990, will join other retired colors such as Prussian Blue, Maize, and Raw Umber.
The Crayola Experience at the Mall of America is honoring Dandelion’s legacy with events starting this weekend, March 31st – April 2nd, by giving out free crayons to the first 100 kids each day this Friday through Sunday starting at their 10:00 am opening time!
Also, throughout April, at the Crayola Experience you can visit for some extra special activities:
- Name and wrap your own Dandelion crayon at Wrap It Up!
- Color an exclusive Dandelion coloring sheet at Colossal Caddy
- Draw Dandelion a goodbye note at Doodle in the Dark
- Take home a limited-edition 2lb Dandelion crayon in The Crayola Store (while supplies last)
As most Twin City parents know, the Mall of America is a destination in and of itself with over 500 stores, the gorgeous Sea Life Minnesota Aquarium, impressive dining, and of course Nickelodeon Universe. There are lots of reasons to visit the MOA – Crayola’s special edition attractions are just one more!

(Plus – watch for news of a special Twin Cities Kids Club family event at the Crayola Experience Mall of America in April!)
Crayola is also sending the Dandelion crayon character on a retirement tour around the country. Yes, really. How cute is that? You can even follow him around online! Consumers can keep track of his whereabouts by visiting an interactive map at www.Crayola.com/tour.
While it’s not clear exactly why Crayola is retiring old Dandelion, it is a great excuse for some fanfare and celebration of one of America’s most iconic childhood playthings. Maybe it will even give us parents a chance to remember the simple fun we had as kids and connect with our own children over a fresh box of crayons!
